A woman’s elusive pursuit of love and independence in the early 1900s takes center stage in Lynn Nottage’s drama, Intimate Apparel.
Esther Mills, a 35-year-old African-American woman, sews beautiful corsets for a living. Her clients reflect the diversity of 1905 New York City, ranging from Fifth Avenue socialites to lower-class prostitutes.
Smart, sensible and ambitious, Esther holds fast to her dreams of opening a beauty parlor in Harlem and finding a husband even though her prospects for love seem remote to her meddling landlady, Mrs. Dickson. In spite of Mrs. Dickson’s advice to marry respectably, Esther begins a courtship by mail with George, a West Indian man working on the construction of the Panama Canal.
With the odds stacked against her, and trapped in the socially stratified world of turn-of-the-century New York, Esther struggles to keep her dreams of love and marriage alive during a time of great cultural and economic change.
